Inspired by awe
Eleazar in the dignity of old age faced his death, faithful to God “because of the awe he inspires in me”. It is this power of awe and attraction which also draws Zacchaeus, a public figure, to forego self consciousness and climb a tree to see his Master. The latter is a new convert, who in discovering the awesomeness of Jesus rights his wrongs and distributes his property to the poor. The former has lived a long life of fidelity to God, which is now the challenge for the latter. So also for us, let us continue to be inspired, and remain faithful to the awesomeness of God now, that in our old age we too may leave a legacy for the young.
