Hearing the Word and Keeping It

Jesus is not an easy person to praise. The woman who calls out in today’s Gospel is implicitly acknowledging how good he is, by praising his mother – and in the culture of the time (as today) that is very high praise indeed. But Jesus turns the praise in another, wider direction – a relationship of faith and commitment which is open to everyone who chooses to both hear the word of God and keep it.
