Jeremiah 18:18-20; Psalm 31; Matthew 20:17-28
To serve is greatness
In our first reading, Jeremiah experiences first-hand how the wicked are driven to seek out and destroy what is good, because the good stands ever as their accuser, reminding them of their guilt, and shaming them even in the midst of their arrogance. And power is the strongest of forces which, if left unchecked, can seduce the hearts of men and women to acts of great malice and cruelty. That is why Jesus counters such unbridled lust for power and prestige by reminding his followers that to be great in God’s kingdom is to live as a servant to all.
