1 Corinthians 7:25-31, Ps 45B, Luke 6:20-26

Eucharistic ethics – blessed and broken

Christ is the blessing cup of new wine (1 Cor 10:16). To the poor, he gives the blessing of the kingdom. To the hungry, Christ provides the blessing of real food. To the sorrowful, he gives the blessing of joyful comfort.

To drink from the blessing cup is to participate in Christ’s work. The disciple, after drinking from the blessing cup freely makes present the kingdom. To the poor, the disciple offers new life. To the hungry, the disciple offers real food. To the sorrowful, the disciple offers joyful comfort. Some brothers and sisters seeking their fill now, find the wine from the blessing cup bitter. Alas for these disciples, the new wine tastes old; the old wine tastes new.
