Lift the burden

The law of God, when properly understood and applied, lifts the burdens of ordinary people. It reveals the purpose of life and even of suffering, making it more bearable. To teach it is a work of mercy. Jesus rails against those with the expertise to know (‘the key of knowledge’), but who do not unlock that ‘knowledge’ to change their own way of life and to help those around them. They prefer to multiply those burdens and to resist the preaching of the prophets – even if it means murder. As they will do with Jesus.
