Legalism and love
Many times, we hear Jesus teaching his disciples that love is more important than the mere observance of the law. His most scathing words were for those who thought themselves holy because they scrupulously kept all the rules and despised those who were not able to do so. There is a danger for us too. When we have in fact obeyed the ten commandments and the precepts of the church we may think that we have done well. True holiness goes much further. It is about being 'another Christ' in all our words and actions. We will fail but our failures keep us humble and dependent on God’s grace.
