Obedience is something active
“Cease to do evil. Learn to do good, search for justice, help the oppressed” – that is how obedience to God expresses itself in the way we are to live. Otherwise, obedience becomes a word empty of conviction, and we are no different from the Scribes and the Pharisees, the hypocrites, in our Gospel reading today. They are never short of words to expound the law but, in reality, their actions show how easily they twist the law to elevate their own status in the eyes of people, and to further their own self-interest.
