The master’s table

Solomon grew old and strayed from God’s way. In so doing, Solomon incurred God’s judgement: under his son, Israel will be divided and his son will rule only over a remnant of Israel.

From this remnant, God will still work to bring about salvation for his people.

This remnant also symbolises the scraps that will fall from God’s table; scraps that will be the source of salvation for the nations symbolised in the words of the pagan women in our gospel reading, for even a remnant, or scrap from God’s table brings about abundance for those who eat of it.
