Is it all about me?
When people acknowledge my good work, I love it, but if somebody wants to help I say ‘no.’ That’s because I’m protecting my patch. I want the acclaim. That’s jealousy. Our friend Saul was jealous because David received more applause. Saul noted: “He has all but the kingship now.” Whether I’m the King of the Castle or the linen washer in the church sacristy I have to ask, “For whom am I doing this job?” If it is for God, then I’m delighted that others help. If for myself, I want to keep others out.
