A special relationship

What sounds to our ears like a fairly off-handed dismissal by Jesus of his mother and brothers [cousins] can also be read in another way. Those closest to Jesus were Mary and other family members and in the culture of the time, there was no deeper relationship. So for Jesus to indicate that those who follow the will of God will enjoy the same kind of relationship with him is to offer an extraordinary sign of the depth of his love for us.
