Ambition
The message from scripture today is that we should only be ambitious to do good without reward. Paul continues his description of a good leader, but the punch line is ‘we must be self-restrained and live good and religious lives here in this present world, while we are waiting in hope for the blessing which will come …’ William Barclay explained the Gospel this way: ‘… we can never put God in our debt and can never have any claim on Him.’ All we can do is do our best, and leave the rest up to God.
