Rewarding what is good
Elisha takes over from Elijah as prophet of Israel. Elisha asks, ‘Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?’ And by a spectacular sign – the parting of the waters of the river Jordan – God shows himself to be with Elisha. In contrast, Jesus tells his disciples not to rely on great portents and miracles to know God is near. We need only do what is fitting and right. Nor do we need to draw attention to ourselves, because God – who sees all that is done in secret – will reward us appropriately.
