Spikenard, which is worth almost a year’s wages is a symbol on Pope Francis’ crest. Mary humbly lavishes the perfume on Jesus’s feet spreading fragrance everywhere. Catholic devotional life is meant to be explosive, in a sense subversive and countercultural, spreading the fragrance of the Holy Spirit everywhere. In Holy Week we reflect on what salvation cost Jesus. Mary ignores adverse opinion, extravagantly anointing Jesus for his passion, showing the superabundance of his kingdom. We proclaim hope in God’s victory over sin and death witnessing to the explosive transforming power of God’s superabundant love. What does loving Jesus cost me?
