Plain Speaking
It is with the words in today’s Gospel reading, proclaimed on a level stretch of ground, that the Lord Jesus begins his Sermon on the Plain. To use well known clichés, this sermon tells us that he is a straight shooter, that he calls a spade a spade, that he levels with us, that we know where we stand with him, that he gives us the unvarnished truth. Pray that today’s preachers and politicians will learn from him and, with greatest respect for their listeners, tell the truth without fear.
