Welcome to our new Editor
Father Bernard Carney grew up in Lauriston, near Ashburton, Mid Canterbury. He was educated at the local primary school, St Bede’s College in Christchurch and Mount St Mary’s Seminary Greenmeadows, being ordained in 1971. He completed a degree at the University of Canterbury, and spent three years as Chaplain to the Tertiary Institutions of Christchurch.
Bernard taught in Society of Mary schools for some 22 years: at St Bede’s, Pompallier College (Whangarei), Chanel College (Samoa), and St Patrick’s College, Silverstream. After a second stint at Chanel College, he was Tertiary Chaplain in Christchurch for a further six years.
In 2002 Bernard spent a year working in parishes in Ireland, and in 2003 he was part of a team that helped to develop lay ministries in South Hokianga. He became a parish priest in the Christchurch Diocese in 2007, transferring to Napier Pastoral Area at the beginning of 2013. After renewal overseas in the second half of last year, Bernard has arrived in Wellington and in the MM office, and we welcome him warmly.
