Understanding the washing

Jesus affirms that if he washes us, (with the baptism he is about to undergo), we are made one with him, share life “in common with” him. How well we appreciate this, is measured by the extent to which we then put into practice his ‘mandatum’ his example of lowering ourselves to wash the feet of others.
