Our Unrepayable Debt

Do we really appreciate the significance of “Salvation”? Today’s Gospel reminds us of an unpalatable truth: that not one of us “deserves” to go to Heaven, that we will only be saved because Jesus repaid the debt, created by our sinfulness, a debt which was so great that we could never have repaid it, no matter how “good” we might claim to be. Thus can we all, even the greatest of saints, sing: “Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.”
