Beheading of John the Baptist

Jeremiah 1:17-19, Ps. 71, Mark 6: 17-29

Fearless courage

Jesus’ cousin John was called to prepare the way for Jesus mission here on earth.

He responded with courage. His words and actions were without compromise. He made enemies as well as friends. He was known as a “good and holy man” and because of this Herod protected him. He liked to listen to John speak. He was troubled when his wife was furious with John for speaking out about her relationship with Herod. She wanted John killed and on her daughter’s birthday she found the opportunity.

As with his beloved Master John who was innocent of any crime was savagely killed.

“Be a rock where I can take refuge, a mighty stronghold to save me; for you are my rock, my stronghold.”
